Safari Planning and Booking

When is the best time to visit Tanzania for a safari?

Tanzania offers excellent wildlife viewing throughout the year. June to October is ideal for dry-season safaris, while December to March is popular for the Southern Serengeti calving season. The best time depends on the wildlife, destinations, and experiences you want.

How many days do I need for a Tanzania safari?

A safari of six to eight days is ideal for exploring Tanzania’s Northern Circuit, including Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara. Shorter and longer itineraries can also be arranged.

How far in advance should I book my safari?

We recommend booking six to twelve months in advance, particularly if you plan to travel during peak season. Earlier booking provides a better choice of accommodation and allows enough time to plan every detail.

Can Serengeti Steppe Travels create a private safari?

Yes. We specialize in private, tailor-made safaris designed around your interests, schedule, preferred accommodation, and budget. You will travel with your own professional driver-guide and private safari vehicle.

What is included in a Tanzania safari package?

Most packages include accommodation, park fees, meals during the safari, private transportation, game drives, bottled drinking water, and the services of a professional driver-guide. Your quotation will clearly show all inclusions and exclusions.

Can I combine a Tanzania safari with Zanzibar?

Yes. A safari can easily be combined with a relaxing Zanzibar beach holiday. We can arrange domestic flights, airport transfers, beach accommodation, and activities in Stone Town and around the island.

Wildlife and Safari Experience

What animals can I see on a Tanzania safari?

You may encounter lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, hippos, cheetahs, leopards, and many other species. Tanzania is also an outstanding destination for birdwatching.

Where can I see the Great Migration?

The Great Migration can be seen in different parts of the Serengeti throughout the year. The herds are commonly found in the south during the calving season and move toward the western and northern Serengeti as the year progresses.

Is seeing the river crossing guaranteed?

No. River crossings are natural events and cannot be guaranteed. However, travelling during the right season, spending enough time in Northern Serengeti, and having an experienced guide can improve your chances.

What is the best place to see the Big Five in Tanzania?

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Tanzania’s best locations for seeing several members of the Big Five in one area. Serengeti National Park is also excellent for lions, leopards, elephants, and buffaloes.

What is the difference between a private and group safari?

A private safari gives you greater flexibility over your schedule, game-drive duration, and places of interest. Group safaris are shared with other travellers and usually follow a fixed itinerary and timetable.

What type of vehicle is used for game drives?

Our safaris use specially equipped 4x4 Land Cruisers with pop-up roofs for wildlife viewing and photography. The vehicles are designed for comfort and for travelling on Tanzania’s safari roads.

Travel Preparation and Safety

Is Tanzania a safe destination for safari travellers?

Tanzania is a well-established safari destination. Travellers should follow the guidance of their driver-guide, respect park regulations, protect their valuables, and take the usual precautions expected when visiting another country.

Do I need a visa to visit Tanzania?

Visa requirements depend on your nationality. Many travellers can apply for an electronic visa before travelling, while others may qualify for a visa on arrival. Always confirm the latest requirements with an official Tanzanian embassy or immigration authority.

What vaccinations or medicines do I need?

Health requirements vary depending on your nationality, travel history, and itinerary. Consult a qualified healthcare professional before travelling for advice about recommended vaccinations, malaria prevention, and personal medication.

What should I pack for a Tanzania safari?

Pack lightweight neutral-coloured clothing, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, insect repellent, a warm layer, binoculars, and a camera. Soft-sided luggage is recommended when using small domestic aircraft.

Are Tanzania safaris suitable for children?

Yes. A private family safari can be adapted to suit children with shorter game drives, family-friendly lodges, flexible meal times, and suitable activities. Some accommodations have minimum age restrictions, so advance planning is important.

What currency should I bring to Tanzania?

The Tanzanian shilling is the local currency, but US dollars are widely accepted in the tourism industry. Carry some local currency for smaller purchases and ensure that US dollar notes are in good condition and from accepted recent series.
