Lake Eyasi
Lake Eyasi is a remote seasonal salt lake located southwest of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Surrounded by rugged hills, acacia woodlands and open plains, the area offers a peaceful contrast to Tanzania’s busier safari destinations. Its changing water levels attract a variety of birdlife, while the surrounding landscape supports wildlife adapted to this dry and beautiful environment.
The main reason to visit Lake Eyasi is the opportunity to learn about the Hadzabe and Datoga communities. Visitors can join Hadzabe hunters on an early-morning walk, discover their traditional knowledge of the land, and meet Datoga craftspeople known for farming, metalworking and jewellery-making. When approached respectfully, a visit to Lake Eyasi offers meaningful cultural insight and a deeper understanding of Tanzania’s diverse communities.
