Lake Natron

Lake Natron is a remote alkaline lake in northern Tanzania, situated beneath the dramatic Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano near the Kenyan border. Its mineral-rich waters, striking colours, volcanic surroundings and rugged terrain create one of Tanzania’s most unusual landscapes. The lake is also an important breeding ground for large numbers of lesser flamingos.

Visitors can explore the lakeshore with a local guide, observe flamingos from a respectful distance and walk to nearby waterfalls flowing through rocky gorges. The area also provides opportunities to learn about the Maasai communities that inhabit this remote region. Lake Natron is ideal for adventurous travellers interested in dramatic scenery, walking experiences, birdlife and destinations beyond Tanzania’s traditional safari route.
